Soldotna 2007

Roughly 650 moose have been killed

by drivers and the Alaska Railroad

since last July, when the count began.

Winter is the deadliest month, as moose

seek relief from deep snow

on roads and tracks.

The Alaska Dept. of Fish & Game

says a second spike usually occurs

in late May and June

as traffic picks up and calves appear.
